How to buy diamond jewellery

Updated 2026-10-31 · Parmod Jewellers, Faridabad

The first question is not size. It is: natural or laboratory-grown?

1. Natural vs laboratory-grown

Both are real diamond — same material, same sparkle. The difference is origin and price. Lab-grown diamonds cost much less and have very little resale value.

Under the Indian standard adopted in 2026 (IS 19469):

  • "Diamond" on its own means a natural diamond.
  • A lab-made stone must be called "laboratory-grown diamond" or "laboratory-created diamond".
  • Words like "cultured" or "earth-friendly" are not allowed for lab-grown stones.

2. The 4Cs

  • Cut — how well it is shaped. Decides the sparkle.
  • Colour — D is colourless; further down the alphabet is more yellow.
  • Clarity — tiny marks inside. Fewer marks, higher price.
  • Carat — weight. 1 carat = 0.2 g.

3. Check the certificate

For bigger stones, ask for a certificate from a known lab such as GIA, IGI or SGL. Match:

  • the report number (often laser-written on the diamond's edge)
  • carat weight and size
  • the words "natural" or "laboratory-grown"

4. Watch out for

  • Total weight vs centre stone. "1 carat ring" may mean many small stones adding up to 1 carat. Ask for the centre stone weight.
  • Look-alikes. Moissanite and CZ (cubic zirconia) look like diamond but are not diamond.
  • Buyback and exchange. Ask for the shop's buyback terms in writing before you buy.

5. Gold in diamond jewellery

Diamond jewellery is usually 18K or 14K gold. That gold should be hallmarked — check the HUID in the BIS CARE app.
