How to buy precious stones

Updated 2026-10-31 · Parmod Jewellers, Faridabad

With gemstones, the big price difference is between natural, treated and synthetic stones. They can look the same.

1. Three kinds of stone

  • Natural — formed in the earth, not treated (or only lightly).
  • Treated — natural, but improved. Examples: heated sapphire, oiled emerald, glass-filled ruby (cracks filled with coloured glass). Treated stones cost much less than untreated ones.
  • Synthetic — made in a lab. Same material, far cheaper.

2. Get a lab certificate

For any costly stone (neelam, pukhraj, panna, manik), ask for a report from a recognised lab — for example GTL Jaipur or IIGJ Lab in India, or IGI. The report should say:

  • the stone's name (species)
  • natural or synthetic
  • any treatment
  • weight in carats

3. Carat vs ratti

Shops often quote ratti. But "ratti" is not one fixed weight — one common ratti is about 0.91 carat, another is about 0.6 carat. Always ask for the weight in carats and get it on the bill.

4. Watch out for

  • Glass-filled rubies sold as natural ruby at a natural price.
  • Coloured glass or synthetic stones in cheap navratna sets. Ask what each stone is.
  • Health claims. Be careful with any promise that a stone will cure an illness. Indian law restricts advertising charms as cures.
