How to buy gold jewellery

Updated 2026-10-31 · Parmod Jewellers, Faridabad

Gold is bought by weight and purity. Check both before you pay.

1. Look for the hallmark

A BIS hallmark has three marks:

  • BIS logo — the triangle mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
  • Purity — for example 22K916. This means 91.6% pure gold.
  • HUID — a 6-character code made of letters and numbers. Every hallmarked piece has its own.

Hallmarking is compulsory in Faridabad district since June 2021. Pieces under 2 g, and kundan, polki and jadau work, are exempt.

2. Know the karat

KaratMarkPure goldUsed for
24K99599.5%Coins and bars
22K91691.6%Most traditional jewellery
18K75075%Diamond and stone jewellery
14K58558.5%Light daily wear

9K (375) was also added as a hallmark grade in 2025. Lower karat costs less, but it is less gold.

3. Understand the price

Price = net gold weight × today's rate for that karat + making charges + GST (3%) + a small hallmarking charge per piece.

  • Making charges are set by each shop — as a % of gold value or per gram. Compare the final price, not just the %.
  • Stone weight is not gold. The bill must show the net gold weight separately.
  • Ask which day's rate is used, and for which karat.

4. Check the bill

A proper bill shows, for each item: description, net gold weight, karat and fineness, rate, making charges, hallmarking charge and GST. Keep it safely — you need it for exchange or resale.

5. If you doubt the purity

Any hallmarked piece can be tested at a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre for ₹200. If it is below the marked purity, BIS rules say the buyer gets twice the difference plus the testing fee.
