Selling or exchanging old gold

Updated 2026-10-31 · Parmod Jewellers, Faridabad

You can sell or exchange old gold at a jeweller, hallmarked or not. The value depends on its real purity and weight.

1. How it is valued

Value = net gold weight × purity × today's rate.

  1. The shop removes or deducts stones, lac and dirt, then weighs the gold.
  2. It tests the purity — usually with an XRF machine (an X-ray scan that does not damage the piece). Watch the test.
  3. It applies today's rate for that purity.

2. Exchange vs selling for cash

  • Exchange (old gold for new jewellery) usually gets a better value than selling for cash.
  • Each shop sets its own deduction. Ask for it as a number, before testing: "How much will you deduct, and why?"

3. Hallmarked vs not hallmarked

  • Old hallmarked gold shows its purity on the piece — easy to agree on value.
  • Old unhallmarked gold is still accepted. It is valued by the purity test.
  • You cannot get old jewellery hallmarked yourself, but you can get its purity tested at a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre.

4. Bring with you

  • The old bill, if you have it.
  • An ID card.
