How to buy silver jewellery

Updated 2026-10-31 · Parmod Jewellers, Faridabad

Silver is priced by weight and purity, like gold. The traps are different.

1. Know the purity marks

MarkSilverCommon for
99999.9%Coins and bars
990 / 97099% / 97%Utensils, idols, pooja items
92592.5% (sterling)Jewellery — strong enough for daily wear
80080%Payal, heavy traditional pieces

2. Silver hallmarks

Silver hallmarking is voluntary in India. Since 1 September 2025, a hallmarked silver piece carries the BIS logo with the word SILVER, the purity (like 925) and a 6-character HUID. You can check the HUID in the BIS CARE app, just like gold.

No hallmark? Ask the shop to write the purity on the bill.

3. Watch out for

  • German silver has no silver in it. It is a copper-nickel-zinc mix. It looks like silver but has no resale value.
  • Silver-plated items have a thin coat over another metal. Ask: "Is it solid silver? What purity?"
  • Price by piece vs by weight. Real silver is sold by weight plus making. A fixed price per piece with no weight on the bill is a warning sign.

4. Price and bill

Price = weight × today's rate (adjusted for purity) + making + GST (3%). Check the weight on the scale yourself. The bill should show weight and purity.
